Bach the European: Bach and the Extended Family.

This programme places Johann Sebastian Bach in the context of works by two of his distant cousins. Johann Sebastian evidently valued Johann Bernhard’s orchestral suites, as he had a number of them copied for his collegium musicum. The preservation of Johann Ludwig’s choral works is also due primarily to Johann Sebastian, who performed many of them in Leipzig in 1726, the same year that Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal in das Reich Gottes eingehen was written. The Bach family tree shows that Johann Sebastian was not a ‘one-off’, as demonstrated in the numerous works in the Altbachisches Archiv collection.
